| July 23, 2010 NORTH VANCOUVER – Residents of the North Shore will benefit from $1,087,045 in provincial funding that will be put toward local public safety initiatives. The funding is part of a $38.6 million instalment from the Strategic Community Investment Fund. “We greatly value our quality of life on the North Shore due in part to our safe communities that will remain more secure in the fight against crime with this funding boost from the province,” says North Vancouver-Lonsdale MLA Naomi Yamamoto. “By delivering all traffic fine revenues back to the local community, we are equipping municipalities with a stronger arm in punching out crime,” says West Vancouver-Capilano MLA Ralph Sultan. “Funding for public safety initiatives is an important priority for families on the North Shore and the province is doing its part in helping us maintain safe streets and communities,” says West Vancouver-Sea to Sky MLA Joan McIntyre. “As a parent, public safety is a real concern for me and my family and this transfer of funds is helping us all to continue enjoying one of the province’s safest communities,” says North Vancouver-Seymour MLA Jane Thornthwaite. Each of the three North Shore municipalities will see a full return of all local traffic fine revenue as follows:
The Strategic Community Investment Fund is a restructuring of provincial grants, consisting of the Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing program and Small Community and Regional District Grants. This payment of $38.6 million to B.C.’s communities is the third instalment of a total $227 million provided to local governments since 2009; a first instalment of $133 million was paid to communities in March 2009 and a second instalment of $55.5 million was paid in September 2009. Since 2001, the Province has given communities $413 million in traffic fine revenues and $363 million in Small Community and Regional District Grants.
