MLA Aims to Raise Awareness of Autism

VICTORIA –North Vancouver-Seymour MLA Jane Thornthwaite made the following statement in the legislature today to raise awareness of Autism and its related challenges.

“I rise today to speak in recognition – and support -- of Autism Awareness Month and to acknowledge World Autism Day, which takes place tomorrow.

“Autism is the most common neurological disorder affecting an estimated one child in every 110. It is more common than pediatric cancer, diabetes and AIDs combined – tens of millions of people throughout the world are affected.

“Across my riding of North Vancouver-Seymour, I have numerous friends and colleagues who are parents of children with Autism, from all levels of the spectrum.  I cannot begin to appreciate their day to day struggles.

“There is much we don’t know about Autism.  What we do know is:

  • it affects almost four times as many boys as girls;
  • there has been a marked increase in the numbers of children diagnosed with ASD in recent years;
  • it knows no geographic, ethnic, racial nor socio-economic boundaries;
  • it may impact verbal and non-verbal communication, social interaction, cognitive ability, behaviour and sensory perception, making it difficult for those affected to tell us how they are feeling, what they need, how they see and interact with the world around them and the people in it;
  • it is a lifelong disorder. At this time, there is no cure.

“Someone once said, ‘to know one child with Autism, is to know one child with Autism’, a line that speaks clearly to the truly unique way Autism affects the life of each individual it touches.

“In the House today, I’m sure many of us have a personal connection to Autism – a son or daughter, grandchild, nephew or niece... the child of a colleague or friend.  A neighbour.

“Autism Month and World Autism Day reminds us to support those affected by Autism, ensuring all children and youth are valued, respected and supported in achieving their potential.”
